Lori Getz speaks about internet safety.

Annually, cyber education consultant Lori Getz visited Flintridge Prep to guide the freshman class on how to safely navigate and utilize the complicated world of technology. Getz travels around the country to speak to both students and parents about the importance of online safety. She wrote a book, The Tech Savvy User’s Guide to the Digital World, which appeared on several television and radio shows, including the “Dr. Phil Show” and “Good Morning America.”

Based on her career teaching online safety, she does not dislike technology nor does she believe that it should be withheld from teenagers. Rather, she believes technology is an important part of our lives. Getz encouraged us to maintain an awareness that we can lose control over content that we post online or send as a message. We have no idea where the information will end up or who else will be able to see it.

Alec Guthrie ‘22 stated that Getz opened his eyes to the dangers of the online world and plans to use technology safely and securely now that he has taken what Getz said to heart.

Getz opened our eyes to the dangers that we face whenever we use our devices to send messages and access social media networks. What may seem harmless can actually lead to physical and psychological harm to ourselves and others.
