Here at Prep, we are all about giving back to those who are less fortunate than we are; every member of the Prep community strives to make an impact in the area around us. For the French Honors Society, their annual French Week event (which took place November 12-16th) combines their extensive knowledge of French culture and customs with this desire to help others.

Every year, the French Honors Society comes together to brainstorm what they will include in the festivities of French Week. They work with the kitchen staff to bring a themed menu, a crêpe sale and selling a FHS Suprême shirt.

When asked about the menu, FHS member Jeffrey Pendo ‘20 commented, “I really loved the French entrées. My favorite was the salmon provençal.” The crepe sale was a big hit. FHS communications chair Kailyn Chiu ‘19 commented, “I had a lot of fun making the crêpes, and it was kind of crazy that we sold out of all of them.”

All of the proceeds from this week went to help Jackson Elementary School in Pasadena with their new French immersion program. Chiu elaborated, “We are planning to purchase books and school supplies to help them [get started with their new initiative].” These materials would allow Jackson Elementary to teach their students another language, which is a big advantage anyone can have in their life. Kendal Kully ‘19, the President of French Honors Society, estimates that FHS “made a total of $490 which is much higher than our goal and we surpassed last year’s profits also. That also doesn’t include our t-shirt sales, which we haven’t calculated yet.”
As a part of Prep, the French Honors Society strives to use the resources they have to make a positive impact on the community at large. They are using their platform to help elementary school kids learn a language that has changed their lives forever and we, as a community, should try to emulate that same compassion for service.
