For the past four years, Mayfield Senior has not lost one league meet…until now. On Thursday, April 6th, 2023, the Flintridge Prep Wolves beat the Cubs, winning by 10 points (90-80).
As many may know, swimming at Mayfield Senior is something of a rite of passage. Everyone and their mother swims at Mayfield Senior—seriously, the team consistently has a roster of almost four times the amount of swimmers at Prep. With a whopping 42 swimmers total, including 17 varsity swimmers, the Cubs may have looked stronger, compared to the 11 Prep swimmers. However, as the many spectators in attendance soon discovered, it was the Wolves who proved victorious once in the water.
Besides winning as a team, the girls also had a number of individual highlights. With swimmers qualifying for CIF-Southern Section events within Division 2 automatic times and over half of the team placing in the top three at least once throughout the meet, the girls left it all out in the pool. Some notable highlights of the meet include the A and B 400 free relays placing 1st and 2nd, beating out Mayfield’s A relay – a rare occasion in swimming and tight races for event winner titles for Addie Gish ‘25 (200 free, 100 back), Charlotte Fishman ‘25 (50 free, 100 fly), Natalie Walklett ‘25 (100 free, 100 breast), and very close second and third place finishes for Megan Lee ‘25, Dylan Docter ‘26, Sarah Iturbe ‘25. An honorable mention to the boys team who competed against themselves, racing towards another win for the season. Time will only tell whether the girls win or lose at League Finals, but so far their season is shaping up to be a great one.
