Millions of people from around the world descend on Pasadena, California, for the annual Tournament of Roses, a display of pomp and splendor ringing in the new year. Starting at 8:00 am on the corner of Green Street and Orange Grove Blvd in Pasadena, the Rose Parade is a 5½-mile celebration of cheer and enjoyment. The parade attracts around 800,000 spectators, some of whom sit on available bleachers along the streets of Pasadena. What do they all come for? They come for the decorated floats, marching bands, equestrian units, and the joyful spirit of the new year!
This year’s theme was “Best Day Ever!” decided by President Ed Morales. The Tournament of Roses begins with an opening performance, and this year’s performers were Kiesza and Aloe Blacc. The floats themselves were brightly colored, flourished in bloom, and alive in spirit. Spectators could see each float covered with flowers, leaves, seeds, and bark. These delicate natural materials were individually and carefully placed on the floats over a variety of days to showcase a beautiful theme. Some of the themes included cars, Wicked, food, celestial objects, people, and a variety of animals.
The organizations and cities participating in the parade stretched from local to international. The San Diego LA Zoo, Boys and Girls Club, and Pasadena Humane all participated. The marching bands and color guard featured high school students of LAUSD, Mexico, the 605 All Star Band, and this year’s Rose Bowl 2025 rivals University of Oregon and Ohio State University.
According to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, “Each year, more than 80,000 hours of volunteer work are contributed by 935 volunteer members of the Tournament of Roses Association.” This includes students who not only dedicate their time to finalizing the floats, but can even participate and take part in the parade. One such special opportunity is the Rose Court where every year, hundreds of girls over the age of 17 are able to compete to become the Rose Queen, and the Princess and Queen can be seen in the parade. One of our very own Prep students, Natalia Pradhan, was a Princess in the 2025 Rose Court!
The Tournament of Roses is a wonderful Pasadena tradition. For a little while, Pasadena is transformed into a marvelous sight for all to behold and partake in, bringing the community all together. This year’s Rose Parade was the 137th Rose Parade, and was another great kickoff to start the 2025 year.
