On February 9th, 2025, as the last whistle of the 2025 NFL season sounded at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the Philadelphia Eagles secured their long-awaited victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59. For the Eagles, this marked the second time they had ever won this coveted trophy, bringing home the Lombardi trophy to a fanbase long hungry for this battle-fought victory. In a rematch of Super Bowl 57, the most important game of the NFL season was largely dominated by the Eagles, who won by a final score of 40-22. However, for the Chiefs, this marked the first time they had not won the Super Bowl since 2022, falling short of the first three-peat in NFL history.
This win was especially significant for Philadelphia and their fanbase, especially after the heartbreaking 38-35 loss the Eagles suffered two years ago to this very same Chiefs team. Due to the prior domination and clutch performances of future hall-of-fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs of both this year and the years prior, many, including the Vegas prop line, expected the Chiefs to three-peat as the prior defending champions. However, Eagles stars Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and Devonta Smith led a 17-3 Eagles team to an absolutely dominant victory over the Chiefs. Eagles star Jalen Hurts, one of the most elite quarterbacks in the NFL, took home the Most Valuable Player Award for this year’s Super Bowl, throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns in a standout performance for this young Eagles star.
While the Chiefs won the coin toss, the Eagles controlled the rest of the game, running away with a score of 24-0 by halftime. From the beginning, the Eagles came out firing, with Jalen Hurts scoring the first touchdown of the game for the Eagles with six minutes left in the first quarter. This lead was only expanded upon in the second quarter, as Cooper DeJean, on his 22nd birthday, returned an interception off Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a pick-six, adding to the already large lead the Eagles had on the Chiefs. Brown scored another touchdown. The 24-0 lead was a much larger deficit than the 24-14 halftime score from Super Bowl 57.
The Super Bowl Halftime show, always headlined by the most impactful artists of this era, was starred by the one and only Kendrick Lamar. Lamar, 37, a rapper and songwriter, coming off a wildly successful Grammy’s award ceremony where he won 5 awards, put on a visually artistic show. Kendrick brought out the Grammy award winner, SZA, while performing hits such as “All The Stars” and “Luther” together in a highly enjoyed moment by fans of both. Kendrick Lamar also performed classic hits such as “HUMBLE.” from the album DAMN., to complement his more recent hits, “Not Like Us” and “Euphoria,” disses of his nemesis Drake. Tennis legend Serena Williams even danced during his performance, stunning the crowd with her surprise appearence.
After the halftime show, the Chiefs pushed back with everything they had in the third quarter. They were unable to make much of a dent into the persistent Eagles defense, as they only scored their first touchdown with 30 seconds left in the third quarter. They were also still 28 points behind, a gap that if overcome, would have been the third largest comeback in NFL history, tying the 2013 Wild Card game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately for Kansas City, this would not be the case, and despite two touchdown passes in the last three minutes of the game, the score would end in a decisive Eagles victory of 40-22.
As the clock wound down, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, dressed in all black Eagles attire, was doused in yellow gatorade, commemorating the victory over Andy Reid and the dynastic Chiefs. This team, faced with many doubts and injuries, prevailed through the struggles, as their ecstatic fans around the country celebrated, throwing parades in the streets of Philadelphia, as their beloved Eagles team brought back home the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophy- their first since 2018. As for the Chiefs, this devastating loss represents the fall from glory that they had rode high on for the last three years, making many wonder what the future holds for this Kansas City franchise.
