The iconic sly fox and dumb bunny duo return to the spotlight once again, nine years later. Within weeks of its announcement, Zootopia 2 became one of the most highly anticipated animated sequels of 2025, with fans buzzing with speculation. However, following Disney’s recent animation lineup, many critics were quite skeptical about the quality of the storyline, with many wary that the sequel would ruin the beloved franchise. These concerns raised the question: Could Zootopia 2 meet the expectations of the public, or would it end up as another Disney animation flop?
The film opens with a brief recap of the first movie before introducing a new case from the ZPD (Zootopia Police Department) assigned to Judy Hopps, a determined rabbit cop, and Nick Wilde, her cunning and playful fox partner. As the pair grapple with the challenge of being taken seriously by the city, a mysterious reptile (a species yet to be seen in Zootopia) enters the scene. It becomes clear that there is a dark secret bubbling beneath the surface of the city’s seemingly perfect utopia. Following new clues, Judy and Nick embark on a journey that tests both their teamwork and understanding of one another. Similar to the original film, Zootopia 2 stays true to its motives in raising awareness on topics such as corruption, cultural erasure, and societal prejudice.
In terms of visuals and quality, Zootopia 2 has proved to be no less impressive than the original. Its fluid, seamless screen movement, paired with a vibrant palette captures the nostalgic and familiar animal metropolis. New regions, terrains, and unique characters are introduced, deepening the storyline. One particular scene was reported to have over 50,000 animals, with the film’s directors, Jared Bush and Byron Howard, describing the sequel as, “the biggest movie ever done in the history of Disney animation”. And of course, a sequel wouldn’t be a sequel if we didn’t see familiar faces. Beloved characters such as Mr. Big, Officer Clawhauser, Flash, and Finnick all make cameos. Many viewers who grew up with the original have commented that the movie “healed their inner child” (IMDb review from Mayjauy). Despite being a children’s film, the 48 easter eggs and pop culture references made the experience just as enjoyable for older audiences too, with the most memorable references being the La La Land homage and The Shining reference. Finally, in typical Zootopia fashion, the film closes with a catchy and iconic song, ‘Zoo’, sung by Shakira who reprises her role as Gazelle.
Overall, Zootopia 2’s balance of humor, nostalgia, and rich visuals contributed to its global success. On its opening weekend, the film earned approximately $556-$559 million globally, setting records for animated films. In merely 17 days, Zootopia 2 became the 8th fastest grossing film to reach 1 billion dollars worldwide and the fastest PG-rated movie ever to hit that milestone. Completely surpassing public expectations, Zootopia 2 became one of the greatest Disney successes.
